The present Rolex Sea-Dweller reference 1665 “Double Red”, offered with its original box and papers, is a superb and highly collectible example of one of the most iconic professional dive watches ever produced. Bearing serial 377XXXX, corresponding to production in 1973, the watch was originally sold in November 1975, a circumstance not uncommon for professional Rolex models of the period. The stainless-steel case remains excellent and well proportioned, having been polished in the past but retaining strong, symmetrical lines and overall crisp geometry. The serial and reference numbers between the lugs remain sharp and clearly defined, confirming the integrity of the case. The watch is fitted with a particularly attractive and rare Mk3 “Double Red” dial, preserved in excellent overall condition. The tritium hour markers have aged to a lightly orange patina, and the original hands match beautifully, creating a highly harmonious appearance. The original bezel insert has faded slightly to a dark navy tone, adding considerable vintage character. The luminous pearl has likely been repaired at some point, a detail sometimes encountered on vintage dive watches that saw real use. The caseback is correctly stamped 1665, and importantly the serial number is also engraved inside the caseback, a feature consistent with many authentic Double Red Sea-Dwellers of the period. The watch is fitted with its original folded Oyster bracelet reference 9315 with 380 endlinks, showing some stretch consistent with age. The clasp is un-dated, which is typical for bracelets from around 1973, and the diver’s extension is engraved “Pateted”, a known and documented engraving variation found on bracelets from this era. The watch was serviced by Rolex Geneva in 2013, and the movement is running perfectly at the time of cataloguing. It is fitted with a service plexiglass crystal, consistent with Rolex maintenance practices. Accompanying the watch is a particularly appealing set including the original box (without outer packaging), original punched papers, booklet, and anchor, forming a highly desirable ensemble for collectors. Combining a rare Mk3 Double Red dial, strong case, original bracelet, and a remarkably complete set of accessories, this Sea-Dweller 1665 represents a compelling opportunity to acquire one of the most historically important and sought-after vintage Rolex dive watches.
