Rolex
Pre-Daytona 6238 Black Dial From 1965

REF: 6238

CHF 158'000 .-

The present Rolex Pre-Daytona reference 6238, dating to 1965 and bearing serial 1.207XXX, is a highly attractive and historically important example of the chronograph that directly preceded the Cosmograph Daytona. The stainless-steel case remains excellent, thick, and well proportioned, having been polished in the past and now displaying a refined soft sleeve-polish finish that remains consistent with the age and honest use of the watch. The case retains strong presence on the wrist, while the reference and serial numbers between the lugs remain visible, though understandably less deep than originally due to natural wear over the decades. The caseback is correctly stamped 6238. The original matte black tritium dial is preserved in excellent overall condition and is one of the key highlights of this example. All luminous plots remain intact and in place, with the sole exception of the 3 o’clock marker, which is partially missing, a minor and honest detail often accepted on vintage sports watches of this age. The original hands remain in place and match beautifully, preserving the watch’s period integrity. The watch is fitted with a desirable riveted Oyster bracelet, showing some stretch fully consistent with its age. The clasp is correctly stamped 3.62, and the bracelet is fitted with two different endlinks, 57 and 60, an unusual but charming detail that reflects the practical servicing life of many vintage Rolex tool watches. While no service history accompanies the watch, the movement is in perfect working condition at the time of cataloguing. Elegant, historically significant, and increasingly difficult to source in such attractive dial condition, this Rolex 6238 “Pre-Daytona” represents a compelling opportunity to acquire one of the most important chronographs in the evolution of the Daytona lineage.
