The present Rolex Explorer reference 1016 Mk 3, dating to 1974 and bearing the serial number 408XXXX, is a strong and well-preserved example of this enduring 36 mm tool watch, combining excellent case definition with a correct mid-1970s configuration. The stainless-steel case is excellent and sharp, having been polished in the past and now showing only light wear consistent with careful use. Importantly, the serial and reference numbers between the lugs remain crisp and well defined, and the caseback is correctly stamped “1016.” The overall proportions and flat bezel profile are particularly appealing. The watch is fitted with its original black matte Mk 3 dial, preserved in excellent condition. The tritium on the hour markers and numerals has been washed, resulting in very clean, bright white indexes—an appearance sometimes encountered on watches that underwent period servicing. The hands are luminova service replacements, offering improved legibility while leaving the original dial intact. Powering the watch is the Rolex calibre 1570, which has just been serviced by our watchmaker and is running perfectly at the time of cataloguing. The watch is paired with a Rolex Oyster bracelet reference 78360 with 580 endlinks, showing very little stretch. The clasp bears the code PJ6, consistent with later service-era bracelets commonly found on well-maintained examples. With its excellent Mk 3 dial, sharp case, freshly serviced movement, and robust Oyster bracelet, this Explorer 1016 represents a compelling opportunity to acquire a clean, wearable, and mechanically sound example of one of Rolex’s most iconic and enduring sports watches.
