The present Rolex Explorer reference 1016 Mk I, dating to 1969 and bearing the serial number 220XXX, is a highly attractive and honest example of this iconic 36 mm tool watch, preserved with strong originality and desirable early features. The stainless-steel case has been polished in the past and shows light wear consistent with careful use, while retaining pleasing proportions and definition. The serial and reference numbers between the lugs remain crisp and well defined, and the caseback is correctly stamped “II.69,” firmly anchoring the watch within its production period. The watch is fitted with an original Mk I “Frog Foot” tritium dial, preserved in excellent condition. The luminous material on the hour markers has aged to a warm vanilla patina, giving the dial a beautifully balanced and period-correct appearance. The hands are original tritium and have aged a few shades darker than the dial, a natural and frequently observed trait that adds character without detracting from the overall harmony of the watch. Powering the watch is the Rolex calibre 1570, which has been serviced by our watchmaker and is running perfectly at the time of cataloguing. The watch is presented on a grained leather strap (non-Rolex); no steel bracelet accompanies the watch. With its desirable Mk I Frog Foot dial, correct late-1960s configuration, strong case details, and freshly serviced movement, this Explorer 1016 represents a compelling opportunity to acquire a classic Rolex sports watch that epitomizes the understated, utilitarian spirit of the model.
