Rolex
Daytona 6239 Paul Newman Tiffany & Co 1968

REF: 6239

CHF 775'000 .-

The present Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Paul Newman Tiffany & Co.” reference 6239, dating to circa 1968 and bearing case number 1’874’XXX, is an extraordinarily rare and historically important example of one of the most coveted vintage Rolex chronographs ever produced. Reference 6239 was the very first model within the iconic Daytona family and remained in production from approximately 1963 until 1976. Available in stainless steel as well as in 14K and 18K gold, the 6239 marked a major evolution for Rolex chronographs by introducing, for the first time, a tachymeter scale engraved directly onto the bezel. Originally announced under the name “Le Mans”, the model was eventually renamed “Daytona” in tribute to the legendary 24 Hours of Daytona automobile race. Few retailers in watchmaking history have shared a relationship with Rolex as prestigious and enduring as that of Tiffany & Co. Throughout the decades, the legendary American jeweler retailed some of the rarest and most desirable Rolex wristwatches ever produced, from GMT-Masters to Cosmograph Daytonas. The present watch, combining both the coveted “Paul Newman” exotic dial and the prestigious Tiffany & Co. signature, belongs to an extremely small and elite group of known examples. To date, only a handful of correct Tiffany-signed Paul Newman Daytonas have surfaced publicly. Historically, Tiffany & Co. has long been associated with exceptional timepieces and high-profile collectors. Its name has appeared throughout literature, cinema, and popular culture, and famously, Joanne Woodward purchased a Rolex Daytona with exotic dial from Tiffany & Co. for her husband Paul Newman, giving birth to one of the most legendary stories in vintage watch collecting. The present watch is, to the best of our knowledge, among the finest preserved examples of a Tiffany-signed Paul Newman 6239 to appear on the market. The iconic exotic dial remains in exceptional condition, with the outer track free of tarnishing and all graphics remaining crisp, clean, and correct. The luminous plots are perfectly round, fully intact, and have aged to a warm and attractive patina. The stainless-steel case is equally impressive, preserved with crisp finishes and strong proportions throughout. Most notably, an engraved code is present beneath one lug, believed to be an internal Tiffany & Co. inventory marking, a detail also encountered on other important Tiffany-signed Rolex watches and further reinforcing the watch’s originality and provenance. The watch is powered by the celebrated manual-winding Rolex calibre 722-1 with 17 jewels and is fitted with its original Rolex Oyster bracelet with 71N endlinks and deployant clasp stamped 4.67. Measuring 37 mm in diameter, the watch retains all the elegant and sporty proportions that have made the early Daytona one of the most iconic chronographs ever created. Rare beyond words, historically significant, and preserved in exceptional condition, this Rolex Daytona 6239 “Paul Newman Tiffany & Co.” represents the absolute pinnacle of vintage Rolex collecting.
