The present Rolex Day-Date reference 1803 in yellow gold, dating to circa 1976 and bearing the serial number 4’206’XXX, is distinguished by its exceptionally attractive and rare red “dégradé” vignette dial set with diamond hour markers. The dial displays a striking gradation of colour, transitioning from a deep, saturated red at the outer edge to a lighter, more luminous tone toward the centre, an effect that is further enhanced by the brilliance of the diamond setting and gives the watch a particularly elegant and refined presence. Vignette dials were produced using the same artisanal process as the celebrated and highly collectible Stella dials, whereby the dial was rotated during the application of lacquer and subsequently varnished at the periphery to create a smooth and dramatic transition from bright to dark colour; when combined with diamond-set hour markers, this technique results in an especially luxurious visual effect. The 36 mm yellow-gold case is in good overall condition and has been polished recently. As a result, the reference and serial numbers between the lugs have softened slightly but remain legible upon close inspection. The fluted bezel and crown have also been polished; the crown cap shows damage, and a new crown could be supplied if desired. The dial is preserved in good condition, with all diamond-set hour markers present. The luminous accents remain intact and show consistent ultraviolet reaction with the hands, indicating good overall coherence. The Rolex signature exhibits slight oxidation, entirely consistent with age. The watch is fitted with its original yellow-gold President bracelet, bearing clasp code “A”. The bracelet shows some stretch, which is normal and expected for its age, and measures approximately 190 mm in overall length. Powered by an automatic movement with day and date indications, the watch is offered without box or papers. Altogether, this is a rare and visually compelling example of the Day-Date reference 1803, combining an uncommon red dégradé diamond dial with the enduring elegance of Rolex’s most emblematic model.
